The line appears to keep ringing even though callers are being charged up to £6 a minute.
Concerned taxpayers were forwarding 500 of the bogus emails to the powers that be every day but HMRC feared that the true volume of potential victims was much higher.
The messages include the HMRC logo and are outwardly sent from believable email addresses. Taxpayers who fall for the scam risk theft from their bank accounts or having their identify stolen and sold to organised criminal gangs.

The messages are apparently being sent out to coincide with the 31st Jan deadline for self assessment tax returns, when many taxpayers will be due a rebate.

This scam comes along as many Britons face penalty charges for missing the self assessment deadline. "Project Penguin" will involve a restructuring of ITV’s content management system and see content-sharing and discussion features introduced. ITV last week rebranded its online catch-up service as ITV Player, which will focus on its biggest shows in a ‘fewer, bigger, better’ strategy.

This change comes after recent increases of usage of the ITV Catch up service (recently rebranded as ITV Player): In November video views had reached 15.7m, up 1m on the previous month and near 600% increase year on year. Although this number is way below the similar service offered by the BBC the UK online media industry is doing extremely well: In general the audience for online video is growing eight times faster in the UK than the US (source: ComScore Media Metrix) mainly due to the maturity of the online video streaming industry in the US.

Letter from Apple CEO Steve Jobs

Dear Apple Community,
For the first time in a decade, I’m getting to spend the holiday season with my family, rather than intensely preparing for a Macworld keynote.

Unfortunately, my decision to have Phil deliver the Macworld keynote set off another flurry of rumors about my health, with some even publishing stories of me on my deathbed.

I’ve decided to share something very personal with the Apple community so that we can all relax and enjoy the show tomorrow.

As many of you know, I have been losing weight throughout 2008. The reason has been a mystery to me and my doctors. A few weeks ago, I decided that getting to the root cause of this and reversing it needed to become my #1 priority.

Fortunately, after further testing, my doctors think they have found the cause—a hormone imbalance that has been “robbing” me of the proteins my body needs to be healthy. Sophisticated blood tests have confirmed this diagnosis.

The remedy for this nutritional problem is relatively simple and straightforward, and I’ve already begun treatment. But, just like I didn’t lose this much weight and body mass in a week or a month, my doctors expect it will take me until late this Spring to regain it. I will continue as Apple’s CEO during my recovery.

I have given more than my all to Apple for the past 11 years now. I will be the first one to step up and tell our Board of Directors if I can no longer continue to fulfill my duties as Apple’s CEO. I hope the Apple community will support me in my recovery and know that I will always put what is best for Apple first.

So now I’ve said more than I wanted to say, and all that I am going to say, about this.

Steve

Source

BBC reveals plans for iPlayer version 3

Anthony Rose, BBC Future Media controller of vision and online media, has revealed the Corporation is looking to launch BBC iPlayer 3 in the first few weeks of 2009.

Speaking in a video on the BBc Internet blog in December, Rose revealed the player would be "all about socialisation and personalisation"

He added that while the iPlayer is still mostly driven by people using it to catch up with what they've missed on TV and radio, the next version will use social recommendations to promote content.

This new version of iPlayer comes just a few months after the BBC launched it's big screen service, for users of popular media centres and Internet ready games consoles like the Sony PS3 and Nintendo Wii. Workers will have to trawl through an average of 450 messages, 70 per cent of which will be spam. The heavy users of email may face 3,000 such messages in their inboxes.

But beware of using the ‘delete all’ strategy. ‘It may bring a cathartic pleasure but you may be deleting critical information’ so says Bob Hallewell of consultancy Expert Messaging. ‘For each e-mail, either deal with it now, delegate, delete or defer it’, he added.

Some popular Bloggers have also been affected by the holiday period, coming back to find thousands of instances of comment spam in their admin panel to sort through:

"After New Year, I came back to a huge glut of spam in my database! ... The restriction, which allowed users to share downloads on 5 computers owned by them but restricted them to use an Apple iPod, was designed to prevent users from illegally sharing digital downloads.

In what seems to be a purely commercial decision Apple is changing its copy protection restrictions in the hope of selling more music to users that do not use Apple iPods or iPhones for playing their music, or who have several such machines and want to swap their purchases between them.

In the past there have been third party apps available that have been moderately successful in removing the DRM from iTunes downloads, but this is the first time that Apple have purported to be seriously considering the idea themselves. No doubt they have had a lot of convincing to do; to show the record labels that it is worth the risk.

Apple have also announced plans to vary the price of songs at the Macworld Expo trade show in San Francisco that is on 4th-8th January. Instead of the current 79p cost of downloading a song from iTunes, buyers will be charged 59p, 79p or 99p depending on a number of factors including which record label the track comes from.

Google takes Chrome browser out of beta

Google has taken its fledgling web browser Chrome out of beta just 100 days after it was first unveiled.
