Virgin Media kicks off 50mb broadband campaign

|
Earlier this month Virgin Media launched an ad campaign to promote its new 50mb broadband package. The new 50MB service is aimed at enabling a more common use of IPTV- the trials conducted last year in Ashford, Folkestone and Dover, were deemed a success - and demonstrate the potential for offering high definition television programmes across an Internet connection, rather than through cable or satellite.

Copper ADSL lines presently have a general limit of 8MB and that speed can degrade based on a customer's distance from the local telephone exchange, while the optical cable technology used by Virgin Media could potentially give speeds of up to 150MB — although the company has no plans to test those kinds of speeds at this point.
