Phishing scam targets businesses

|
Thousands of businesses are being besieged by fraudsters every day with counterfeit emails trying to swindle them into handing over their bank details.

Small business owners and the self employed are being sent phony e-mail stating that they are owed a tax rebate and asking them for their bank or credit card details so the money can be 'refunded'.

Alternatively they are asked to call a telephone line to leave their information. The line appears to keep ringing even though callers are being charged up to £6 a minute.
Concerned taxpayers were forwarding 500 of the bogus emails to the powers that be every day but HMRC feared that the true volume of potential victims was much higher.
The messages include the HMRC logo and are outwardly sent from believable email addresses. Taxpayers who fall for the scam risk theft from their bank accounts or having their identify stolen and sold to organised criminal gangs.

The messages are apparently being sent out to coincide with the 31st Jan deadline for self assessment tax returns, when many taxpayers will be due a rebate.

This scam comes along as many Britons face penalty charges for missing the self assessment deadline. It is said that charges could amount to over £400 million, and include fines for late returns, surcharges and interest in unpaid tax.

Virgin Media kicks off 50mb broadband campaign

|
Earlier this month Virgin Media launched an ad campaign to promote its new 50mb broadband package. The new 50MB service is aimed at enabling a more common use of IPTV- the trials conducted last year in Ashford, Folkestone and Dover, were deemed a success - and demonstrate the potential for offering high definition television programmes across an Internet connection, rather than through cable or satellite.

Copper ADSL lines presently have a general limit of 8MB and that speed can degrade based on a customer's distance from the local telephone exchange, while the optical cable technology used by Virgin Media could potentially give speeds of up to 150MB — although the company has no plans to test those kinds of speeds at this point.

Wii Board + Google = Surf Google Earth... Literally

|
Surf Google Earth with a Wii board!Googles booth at Macworld this year was used to demonstrate some of the things it was working on with Apple, chiefly for the iPhone. However the coolest object at their booth didn’t have much to do with Apple at all: A hacked Nintendo Wii Balance Board (from the game Wii Fit) used to control Google Earth.

Using the Google Earth application programming interface (API), a Google engineer was able to get the Balance Board to converse with the software using the bluetooth networking capability of the Wii fit board. The result allowed the user to move forward by leaning forward, move backwards by leaning back, etc.

The developer made the demo to motivate others to code their own programs using similar open source methods.

Nokia to manufacture USB mobile internet dongles this year

|
Nokia is start manufacturing USB dongles early next year. The handset manufacturer said it will work closely with operators to sell the devices, which allows notebooks to connect to the internet via 3G networks. Nokia is keen to break into a market that has grown rapidly but is dominated by Far Eastern manufacturers such as Huawei.

The gadget, which will employ a super-fast 3G technology called HSDPA, will be distributed through operators and bundled with mobile services.
Nokia first attempted to penetrate the market for mobile internet in 2006, working in conjunction with Intel; however in early 2007, Nokia and Intel made a mutual decision to stop co-operation on the project.

Mobile operator 3 claims to have sold over 500,00 dongles since they released them over year ago and Strategy Analytics said it expects the worldwide market for dongles to grow to 26 million units in 2009 from 20 million this year.

Five cuts ads to push focus on content

|
UK Broadcaster Five has dropped its standards advertising positions on the home page to give monthly takeovers greater impact for advertisers.

Five has relaunched its home page with a greater prominence on content and programming, and the withdrawal of its normal advertising formats.

The move comes in advance of comparable plans from competitor broadcaster Channel 4, which intends to relaunch its home page later this year without advertising to allow it put greater emphasis on its content.
The home-page layout, which features key content areas such as Five FWD and Five.tv, is flexible and can be moved around by Five to showcase different content. Password Phishing scam hits Twitter users

|
Thousands of members of social networking site Twitter are being hit by scammers posing as friends, with the aim of to stealing their passwords.

Users of Twitter, such as wit Stephen Fry, have received messages that appear to be from friends inviting them to visit a website.

The links go to a fake login page - which then allows the "phishers" to steal the users login details and passwords if they enter that information.

Internet Security firm Sophos has said that the hazard was increased because so many people use the same password for several websites.

Hackers use stolen account information for spam and identity theft. Some messages offer a complimentary Apple iPhone if users click on a link which then prompts them to enter user names passwords and mobile phone numbers.

Stephen Fry unwittingly clicked on one of the bogus messages, as he revealed on his twitter account:

"Lawks. Hope I haven't been phished for all my details. Clicked on scam URL last night before I knew what it was. Eeek"

Twitter users who think they have been affected by the scam are advised to change their passwords as a matter of urgency.

ITV to relaunch site with social media features

|

ITV is to relaunch its website next year with a focus on social media and its most popular shows. "Project Penguin" will involve a restructuring of ITV’s content management system and see content-sharing and discussion features introduced. ITV last week rebranded its online catch-up service as ITV Player, which will focus on its biggest shows in a ‘fewer, bigger, better’ strategy.

This change comes after recent increases of usage of the ITV Catch up service (recently rebranded as ITV Player): In November video views had reached 15.7m, up 1m on the previous month and near 600% increase year on year. Although this number is way below the similar service offered by the BBC the UK online media industry is doing extremely well: In general the audience for online video is growing eight times faster in the UK than the US (source: ComScore Media Metrix) mainly due to the maturity of the online video streaming industry in the US.

Letter from Apple CEO Steve Jobs

|
Dear Apple Community,

For the first time in a decade, I’m getting to spend the holiday season with my family, rather than intensely preparing for a Macworld keynote.

Unfortunately, my decision to have Phil deliver the Macworld keynote set off another flurry of rumors about my health, with some even publishing stories of me on my deathbed.

I’ve decided to share something very personal with the Apple community so that we can all relax and enjoy the show tomorrow.

As many of you know, I have been losing weight throughout 2008. The reason has been a mystery to me and my doctors. A few weeks ago, I decided that getting to the root cause of this and reversing it needed to become my #1 priority.

Fortunately, after further testing, my doctors think they have found the cause—a hormone imbalance that has been “robbing” me of the proteins my body needs to be healthy. Sophisticated blood tests have confirmed this diagnosis.

The remedy for this nutritional problem is relatively simple and straightforward, and I’ve already begun treatment. But, just like I didn’t lose this much weight and body mass in a week or a month, my doctors expect it will take me until late this Spring to regain it. I will continue as Apple’s CEO during my recovery.

I have given more than my all to Apple for the past 11 years now. I will be the first one to step up and tell our Board of Directors if I can no longer continue to fulfill my duties as Apple’s CEO. I hope the Apple community will support me in my recovery and know that I will always put what is best for Apple first.

So now I’ve said more than I wanted to say, and all that I am going to say, about this.

Steve

BBC reveals plans for iPlayer version 3

|
Anthony Rose, BBC Future Media controller of vision and online media, has revealed the Corporation is looking to launch BBC iPlayer 3 in the first few weeks of 2009.

Speaking in a video on the BBc Internet blog in December, Rose revealed the player would be "all about socialisation and personalisation"

He added that while the iPlayer is still mostly driven by people using it to catch up with what they've missed on TV and radio, the next version will use social recommendations to promote content.

This new version of iPlayer comes just a few months after the BBC launched it's big screen service, for users of popular media centres and Internet ready games consoles like the Sony PS3 and Nintendo Wii. Strategically, this release was extremely important, signalling the arrival of internet-delivered on-demand services direct to TV sets rather than to a computer.

The season for spam to all men?

|
Get your delete digit ready today – a 3,000 strong e-mail spam heap could be waiting for you at the office. Workers will have to trawl through an average of 450 messages, 70 per cent of which will be spam. The heavy users of email may face 3,000 such messages in their inboxes.

But beware of using the ‘delete all’ strategy. ‘It may bring a cathartic pleasure but you may be deleting critical information’ so says Bob Hallewell of consultancy Expert Messaging. ‘For each e-mail, either deal with it now, delegate, delete or defer it’, he added.

Some popular Bloggers have also been affected by the holiday period, coming back to find thousands of instances of comment spam in their admin panel to sort through:

"After New Year, I came back to a huge glut of spam in my database! ... The queue contained over 1000 spams, that didn’t include spam in my comment plugin either."

Looks like spammers don't do holidays..

Apple to sell songs without DRM restrictions

|
Apple has agreed to start selling songs from its popular iTunes store without DRM (digital rights management) copy protection. The restriction, which allowed users to share downloads on 5 computers owned by them but restricted them to use an Apple iPod, was designed to prevent users from illegally sharing digital downloads.

In what seems to be a purely commercial decision Apple is changing its copy protection restrictions in the hope of selling more music to users that do not use Apple iPods or iPhones for playing their music, or who have several such machines and want to swap their purchases between them.

In the past there have been third party apps available that have been moderately successful in removing the DRM from iTunes downloads, but this is the first time that Apple have purported to be seriously considering the idea themselves. No doubt they have had a lot of convincing to do; to show the record labels that it is worth the risk.

Apple have also announced plans to vary the price of songs at the Macworld Expo trade show in San Francisco that is on 4th-8th January. Instead of the current 79p cost of downloading a song from iTunes, buyers will be charged 59p, 79p or 99p depending on a number of factors including which record label the track comes from.
